In 2004, Guiyang Teachers' College (founded in 1978) and Guiyang Jinzhu University (founded in 1984) merged to establish Guiyang University(GYU). In 2009, Guiyang Normal School (founded in 1902, originally known as Guiyang Public Normal School initiated by Mr. Li Duanfen) was incorporated into the university.GYUpassed the Ministry of Education's evaluation for undergraduate teaching qualificationin 2010, andunderwent a review assessment in 2017 and was approved as a master's degree-granting institution in 2018.

GYUcomprises 17schoolsandacontinuing education college, covering ten academic disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, management, and arts. It boasts twoprovincial first-class disciplines, two provincial first-class discipline clusters, one provincial characteristic key discipline, and eight provincial key disciplines.GYUoffers 56 undergraduate programs, including one national first-class undergraduate program, one national characteristicprogram, 12 provincial first-class undergraduate programs, two provincial characteristicprogram, and five provincial excellence program initiatives. It has three first-level master's degree authorization points and eight professional master's degree authorization points. Currently, the university has over 12,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 600 postgraduate students.

GYU has a faculty of951 members, including 722 full-time teachers. Among them, 246 hold doctoral degrees, and 471 hold the title of associate professor or higher. The faculty includes four experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, three Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents, one Young Talent in Propaganda and Culture from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, two provincial keyliaisonexperts, and nine provincialliaisonexperts.GYUalso has eight academic leaders in philosophy and social sciences at the provincial level, seven provincial outstanding young scientific and technological talents, 64 provincial high-level innovativetalents (including eight at the "hundred-level" and 56 at the "thousand-level"), 23 provincial outstanding scientific and technological innovation talents in higher education, and one provincial young academic innovativetalent in philosophy and social sciences. Additionally, there is one provincialTeachingMaster, 13provincialGolden Teachers, twoprovincialideological and political education teaching teams, and one outstanding teaching team for ideological and political courses.GYUalso hosts one "National Huang Danian-Style Teaching Team," two provincial "Academic Pioneer" teams, four provincial scientific and technological innovation teams, seven provincial university scientific and technological innovation teams, and two provincial "Top Ten" innovation teams.

GYUhas established one national-level engineering technology research center, six national-level scientific and technological service platforms, one country and regionstudies center, four provincial-ministerial key laboratories, two provincial engineeringandtechnology research centers, two provincial scientific and technological innovation bases, two provincial scientific and technological service platforms, two provincial collaborative innovation centers, one provincial humanities and social sciences research base, five provincial university engineering research centers, seven provincial university characteristic key laboratories, four provincial university-industry cooperation bases, one Guizhou Provincial Science Education Base, and one National Youth Science and Technology Worker Training and Practice Base. Over the years, the university has secured one national key research and development program project,one national key researchproject, six specialized tasks, 55 National Social Science Fund/National Art Fund projects, 70 National Natural Science Fund projects, 56 provincial-ministerial scientific research achievement awards, and 124prefecture-department-levelscientific research achievement awards. The university has 189 on-campus and off-campus practice and training bases. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipmentamounts to275 million RMB. The library houses 1.1597 million printed Chinese and foreign-language books, over 2.11 million e-books, and 36 database resources.

GYUhas four national first-class undergraduate courses. It has received 26 provincial teaching achievement awards in higher education and basic education, including twograndprizes and four first prizes, as well as 26 national and provincial teaching competition awards for teachers. Over the past five years, students have won 215 national awards and 1,166 provincial-ministerial awards in academic competitions. Additionally, 115 projects were approved undernationalCollege Students' Innovative Entrepreneurial Training Plan Program, and 247 projects were approved at the provincial level.
